Print
In January 2009 the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) was founded by governments worldwide to "act as the main driving force in promoting a rapid transition towards a widespread and sustainable use of renewable energy." This paper analyzes the role of, and possibilities for cooperation with, other international groups that share this goal of promoting renewable energy, including the United Nation's Environment Programme (UNEP) the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNDP), the United Nations Development Programme, the International Energy Agency (IEA), the World Bank, the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency partnership (REEP) and the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21).
