Is Water the Hidden Agenda of Agricultural Land Acquisition in sub-Saharan Africa?

This Transnational Institute paper reviews the role of water in foreign land grabs. Irrigation is crucial to crop cultivation and, according to this paper, there is a high risk that new large-scale commercial agricultural projects will negatively impact existing small producers in sub-Saharan Africa. Water remains on the margins of current debates, but as land grabbing expands exponentially, the implications of water grabbing cannot be ignored.
