Belgian police arrested a former Rwandan finance minister on Thursday on an international arrest warrant issued by a U.N. war crimes tribunal in Arusha, Tanzania.
The prosecutor's office in the eastern Belgian town of Verviers said Emmanuel Ndindabahizi, 51, was wanted on charges of genocide, inciting genocide, crimes against humanity and murder. Ndindabahizi was minister from April to July 1994 during the mass slaughter of the country's Tutsi minority and moderates from among the Hutu majority. Up to one million people were killed, the prosecutors office said.
Police arrested Ndindabahizi in a morning raid on his home in Verviers. He was taken to the town jail and should be transferred to the tribunal in Arusha within three months. An official at the prosecutors office said Ndindabahizi had applied for refugee status in Belgium.
