The Security Council,
Expressing its gravest concern over the increasing escalation of hostilities in Lebanon and Israel since July 12, 2006,
Appalled by large numbers of civilian casualties, extensive damage to civilian infrastructure and hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons,
Emphasizing the critical need for urgent humanitarian supplies and mindful of the looming threat of even greater humanitarian catastrophe,
1. Calls for an immediate and full cessation of hostilities for humanitarian purposes for a period of 72 hours;
2. Urges all parties concerned and the international community to provide urgently all required humanitarian assistance to the civilian population in Lebanon;
3. Calls for extraordinary diplomatic efforts to arrive without further delay at a political solution to the crisis;
4. Decides to remain actively seized of the matter.
