UN secretary general representative to Angola, Ibrahim Gambari, said on Monday, in Luanda, that peace in Angola has come to stay. Ibrahim Gambari said so after a meeting he had with the Angolan ruling MPLA party secretary general, Joao Lourenco, during which he reiterated his organization's readiness to continue monitoring the process.
At the meeting with Joao Lourenco, the two examined the Angolan peace process, as well as the future role of the United Nations in the country. According to the UN official, future challenges will be handled with the collaboration of the world body, through the provision of technical assistance and additional resources helping the Government to meet the process of social reintegration of demobilized soldiers.
Gambari pointed out that the new UN role in Angola will focus mainly on the social reintegration of ex-soldiers, support for the organization of the electoral process, demining, upgrading of personnel on human rights and mobilization of resources for a successful international donors conference.
The UN special representative praised the positive attitude of the international community towards the Angolan peace process, judging from the assessment made with Joao Lourenco. Ibrahim Gambari is in Luanda since last week, to discuss with the Angolan authorities the best way for the UN to continue its assistance, after Feb. 15, date of expiry of UN Angola mission.
The conclusion of his visit to Angola will be contained in the report the UN secretary general will submit to the Security Council.
