On June 30, 2010 GPF spoke with Raed Jarrar, an Iraq -born political analyst, about the upcoming withdrawal deadlines for US troops in Iraq. Both the Obama administration and the Iraq government seem committed to honoring the withdrawal timetable. It seems likely, says Jarrar, that Washington will withdraw all combat forces, reducing troop levels to 50,000 by August 2010. The remaining US forces, bases and contractors will be withdrawn by the final deadline in December 2011. Jarrar talks about the many constitutional breaches in the agreement process and the very broad sentiment against the occupation. He says that a complete and timely US withdrawal is vital for Iraq's national sovereignty and political progress.
