This section considers the role of the mass media in the building of a US empire, especially the tendency of the media to support official government positions and to adopt "patriotic" and nationalist thinking, in which internationalism and broad understanding are even less in evidence than usual. Large media companies dominate national and international information systems, raising additional issues about how citizens can understand events and maintain democratic accountability.
