UN Security Council Elections 2009 (September 30, 2009)

The General Assembly will hold elections on October 15 for 5 of the 10 non-permanent member seats on the Security Council. This will be a "clean slate" election, with only 5 candidates for the 5 seats. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lebanon, Brazil, Nigeria and Gabon have won regional endorsements and are, in practice, assured election. Security Council Report highlights how the election of these new members may give rise to interesting and complex issues - notably Security Council reform.
