The secretary-general of the Arab League, Dr Ismat Abd-al-Majid, said the league backs Sudan and stands behind Sudan's just quest to obtain a seat within the Security Council, underlining that Sudan was the nominee of both the Arab and African groups.

In a statement to the Cairo daily 'Al-Ahram' published here Wednesday [19th September], Majid expressed hope that the sanctions would be lifted and that the Sudan would obtain its right in representing the Arab and African group in the Security Council.

On the other hand, Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Musa, said Egypt backs Sudan for obtaining membership of the Security Council. He pointed out to the Arab and African decision backing the Sudan in this regard and that Egypt was part of the two group and that it would vote for the Sudan.

On the American objection to the nomination of Sudan, he pointed out that every state has the right to take whatever position it judges as realizing its own interests.
