Minister Welcomes Nomination for UN Security Council Membership

Khartoum, 4th July: Minister of External Relations, Dr Mustafa Uthman Isma'il, has described African nations' nomination to Sudan for membership of the [UN] Security Council, in its coming session, as recognition of the African countries to Sudan credibility and its leading role at the continent and internationally, as well as affirmation of the sister African states to their confidence in Sudan.

He said in a press statement to Suna that Sudan nomination to the Security Council's membership paves the way for Sudan to play a leading role in the coming important stage, which would begin after convocation of the Millennium Summit in New York next September. Dr Isma'il indicated that Sudan nomination for the Security Council membership came as a boost to the success and accomplishments of the Sudanese diplomacy, and Sudan efforts to enhance its relations with all the countries in the world, a matter which will have positive impact on the peace, economy and investment fields in the country.

He said that the African states' nomination of Sudan to membership of the Security Council means their acknowledgement to the leading role of Sudan and its unique population, climatic and cultural diversity representing Africa, emphasizes Sudan's good relations with all the African countries, and refutes false claims of some ill-intentioned circles against the Sudan.

Dr Isma'il said that Sudan looks forward for lifting the sanctions which were imposed on it by the Security Council, due to the just stance of the country which was backed by all the good and peace-loving forces. Meanwhile, the minister hoped that the ongoing dialogue between Sudan and the United States would result in the latter's belief in the just cause of Sudan.

He added that Sudan is expecting support of the international, Arab, European and Asian groups to its nomination for the Security Council's membership.
