A Resolution expressing opposition to the lifting of any sanctions against Cuba and urging Congress to oppose any effort to lift or weaken sanctions against Cuba and further urging Congress not to take any other action to support Fidel Castro's communist Cuba; and for other purposes.
Whereas, on February 3, 1962, President Kennedy issued Presidential Proclamation 3447 which prohibited exports to Cuba or transactions involving exports to Cuba; and
Whereas, the well-known purpose of this export ban was to express the disapproval of our great nation, founded upon the principles of liberty and democracy, for the communist dictatorship that Fidel Castro brought to Cuba; and
Whereas, Fidel Castro has shown throughout the years that his Cuba is a place where human rights abuses are rampant and democracy and free expression are nonexistent; and
Whereas, it is the duty of free nations to condemn governments who oppress their citizens, and it is in that spirit that the sanctions against Cuba must not be lifted until real change is evident in Cuba's government.
Now, therefore, be it resolved by the Senate that the members of this body express their opposition to the lifting of any sanctions against Cuba and urge Congress to oppose any effort to lift or weaken sanctions against Cuba and further urge Congress not to take any other action to support Fidel Castro's communist Cuba.
Be it further resolved that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to each member of the Georgia congressional delegation.
