Hungary, India Want

New Delhi - India and Hungary have demanded immediate reforms in the United Nations and sought expansion of its Security Council, a foreign ministry spokesman said in New Delhi on Monday. The demand was voiced when External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh met his Hungarian counterpart Janos Martonyi, currently in India for a three-day visit, the spokesman said.

The Security Council is made up of 15 members, five of whom are permanent and enjoy veto power: Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States. The remaining 10 are elected for two-year terms.

Reform of the council has stalled on disagreements among the UN's 188 members on how to proceed.

Singh and Martonyi also exchanged views on international terrorism and trade ties, the spokesman said but no details were immediately available. The possibility of a visit by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to India next year was also broached, the spokesman said.
