GPF Annual Highlights
1994
Security Council We organized a major conference on "Reform of the Security Council" in May. General Assembly President, Samuel Insanally, was a featured speaker, along with Professor Richard Falk of Princeton, Chee Yoke Ling of the Third World Network as well as ambassadors, scholars and NGO leaders. In December, we published the full proceedings of the conference.
Networking & Conferences As GPF's work got under way, we sought out partners and tried to build network links with other like-minded NGOs around the world. The "Global Structures Convocation" in Washington DC in February, which brought together more than a thousand NGOs to discuss the future of the UN, was an important early opportunity to introduce GPF to others. Another such opportunity was a conference at Notre Dame University on "The UN at Fifty," where Jim Paul made a presentation.
Accreditation In the fall, we applied for GPF's first stage of accreditation – with the United Nations Department of Public Information. We supplied materials on our accomplishments and programs thus far.
Tax Exempt Status We applied to the US Internal Revenue Service for tax-exempt status and were given provisional status under section 501(c)(3) of the revenue code.
Newsletter & Occasional Papers We issued two numbers of a new newsletter named Monitor. We also published three policy papers in an "Occasional Papers" series – Erskine Childers " Empowering the Peoples in their United Nations," James A. Paul "Security Council Reform," and the full transcript of the May conference on Council reform.
Fund-Raising We began serious efforts to find funds to finance GPF's work.
Global Policy Forum is supported primarily by contributions from generous individuals who join as members. GPF also receives grants from foundations and partner institutions. GPF is incorporated in the State of New York, registered as a charitable organization and recognized by the US Internal Revenue Service as a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the revenue code.
