GPF Annual Highlights
1999
Security Council We enlarged Council information on the GPF web site and published several policy papers. The NGO Working Group on the Security Council, now in its third year of regular meetings with Council ambassadors, held a total of 45 meetings, including 32 with Council delegations. We encouraged the Council to hold more open meetings and to take further steps towards transparency and accountability.
UN Financial Crisis We continued our outreach work on the UN's financial crisis and we developed a number of new tables and graphs as well as analytical materials. We organized the fourth worldwide vigil, renamed the Millennium Mobilization, on October 23. Events took place in three dozen cities on every continent.
Global Social and Economic Policy We added information on transnational corporations, the World Bank, and global inequality to our web site and we reported on the battles in Washington over neo-liberal economic policy and the Bretton Woods Institutions. We took an active role in the new UN "Financing for Development" process, organizing two NGO panels and an NGO hearing for the General Assembly Working Group.
Web Site We steadily increased the postings on the GPF web site to about 3,500 pages. Site use doubled to over two million hits and the site won further awards.
Program on NGOs In consultation with many NGO partners, we published a major policy paper entitled "NGOs and the United Nations," setting out the problems of NGO access and offering fifty-five policy recommendations. We participated in a conference on NGO access and we joined in private meetings with Assistant Secretary General Gillian Martin Sorensen and Secretary General Kofi Annan. Our web information on NGOs achieved world-class status.
Sanctions Policy We published several policy papers on sanctions, participated in policy meetings with delegates and experts, and played a major role in the NGO effort on conflict diamonds in Angola.
Public Lecture on Iraq Sanctions We organized a public lecture in March by former Assistant Secretary General Denis Halliday, who had served as UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq. Halliday spoke about the humanitarian consequences of the continuing general trade sanctions.
International Public Finance We continued to develop our web resources on this topic, gave several media interviews (including a one-hour radio talk show), and built ties to the emerging political movement for the Tobin Tax.
Globalization We developed a new area of program work around the issue of globalization and added a new section to our web site on this topic.
Media Interviews We gave interviews to many media outlets, including ZDF German TV, Fox Worldwide News, BBC Radio (a show with former Secretary General Boutros Ghali), NKD Japan TV, ABC "World News Tonight" with Peter Jennings, the Christian Science Monitor, and the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
Technology Upgrade Continuing our commitment to cutting-edge technology, we obtained new computer equipment during the year, including a new network server that doubled our processing speed and increased the stability of our system.
Internship Program We adopted new training procedures and information to improve our internships. Sixteen interns joined us during the year from the USA, Germany, Canada, Japan, and Australia, providing diverse perspectives and great support for GPF's programs.
Global Policy Forum is supported primarily by contributions from generous individuals who join as members. GPF also receives grants from foundations and partner institutions. GPF is incorporated in the State of New York, registered as a charitable organization and recognized by the US Internal Revenue Service as a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the revenue code.
