A new policy report highlights the inadequacies of the current global food system. The existing trade model, where the biggest agricultural producers in Europe and North America dump their food surplus on low-income regions is unsustainable. This trade-centric approach privileges countries of the global North and leaves little space for developing countries to promote local food production capacities and achieve national food security. Researchers warn that the blind expansion of industrial agriculture “ignores environmental constraints and equity issues.” They are calling for reduced financial speculation on commodity markets, limited biofuels production and a halt to land grabs.
