European demand for goods requires 640 million hectares of land a year, the equivalent of 1.5 times its own area in land. According to a new report, overconsumption in Europe is making the continent dependent on foreign land and this dependency is having massive social impacts, namely exacerbating land grabbing and land right violations. Although the European Commission has acknowledged the need to address Europe’s land consumption, it has not yet given specific details about how this should be achieved.
