Lisbon, 29th June: In an attempt to give a fillip to their bilateral economic ties, India and Portugal have signed an investment promotion and protection agreement providing for protection and security to investments from each country to the other... The agreement was signed here Wednesday [28th June] night between Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha and Portuguese Foreign Minister Jaime Gama in the presence of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and his Portuguese counterpart Antonio Guterres...

Vajpayee, who earlier met with Guterres and discussed regional and international issues and matters of mutual interests, told reporters that they had agreed to strengthen economic and commercial ties.

Expressing concern over the menace of international terrorism, India and Portugal have decided to cooperate in multilateral fora to develop an organized and collective strategy for defeating the scourge. Vajpayee said he discussed with his Portuguese counterpart the Indian draft of a comprehensive convention on international terrorism to be taken up by the UN General Assembly.

We look forward to Portuguese support for the draft which addresses the deficiencies in existing international conventions, the prime minister added.

Vajpayee, who also discussed with Guterres India's claim for a permanent seat in an expanded UN Security Council, said that inclusion of New Delhi in the council would help project the perspective of developing countries and make it more representative. On any objective criteria India's credentials for permanent membership are persuasive, he said. Extending his country's support to India's claim for a seat in the Security Council Guterres said Portugal is sympathetic towards New Delhi's candidature.
