Where Did All the Protesters Go? (April 18, 2005)

Though International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings often draw protesters in the thousands, the April 2005 protests drew only a few hundred to Washington. This BBC article says protests have gone down in part because 9/11 has shifted priorities and people have moved towards more local activism. With the controversial appointment of Paul Wolfowitz as the new World Bank president, the author speculates that protests could again increase for the September 2005 meetings.

World Bank-IMF Protests Set This Week (April 13, 2005)

Organizers of the two-day protests at the World Bank and International Monetary Fund meetings estimate a crowd of several thousand, which will not compare to the demonstrations in 2000 that attracted over 20,000. In addition to demanding open meetings, debt cancellation, and environmental awareness, activists will also protest Paul Wolfowitz's nomination as the Bank's president. (Washington Post)
